The AIF recruited around 45,000 men in August, and 52,561 by the end of 1914. Thousands of men volunteered to enlist in the military forces. Recruiting offices opened at army barracks around Australia on 10 August. (The British Admiralty became responsible for the Royal Australian Navy when the war began, including the training of Australian naval personnel.)
